The Darker Side of Nottingham

A walk on the wild side

The Brazilian rainforest comes to the New Art Exchange this Thursday (15th October). Yes really. The world of the wild and endangered rainforest is being brought closer through The Dark Forest, an ambitious project by Nottingham-based Active Ingredient. This international collaboration will magically connect Nottingham’s Sherwood Forest with The Atlantic Forest and Amazon Rainforest, Brazil. As befits Active Ingredient’s boundary-crossing approach to the arts, this is all about contrasting the tropical forests of Brazil with our somewhat more temperate forests using tools like GPS, bio and environmental sensors, mobile phones and video. All to create an interactive artwork that will be exhibited in Nottingham in 2010 and in Sao Paulo, Brazil in November. And you can be the first to experience it this Thursday.

An encounter with horror

From the otherworldly ambience of forests to things that go bump in the night. Are you interested in testing your courage for the creepy and your resistance to the unnerving? Apparently those twisted folk at the Mayhem Horror Festival are still looking for victims, er I mean people, to take part in Self Examination from the Thrill Laboratory. Founded by Nottingham-based film-makers Steven Sheil, Chris Cooke and Gareth Howell, Mayhem celebrates all things horror with a whole weekend of spooky films, fancy dress and new shorts from emerging horror-makers.  The festival takes place at the end of this month and they need people willing to have their reactions measured as they watch horror films at the festival. I know this unique experiment isn’t for me, even it was featured on the BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory. (I was never quite the same after watching The Shining…)

A date with Darth

And speaking of getting in touch with your dark side, I hear Darth Vader is visiting Nottingham this weekend.  Taking time out from his busy schedule, Darth Vader (Aka Dave Prowse) will be cutting the ribbon to launch the new Monster Store in Nottingham at 110 Derby Road, from 10am to late afternoon this Saturday. Stormtroopers will be in attendance. You have been warned.
