Design Retrospective

Nottingham Trent University will shortly be hosting a retrospective for one of its ow n.

Philip Watts Design has been one of the UK’s leading creative design houses for 15 years now, but before that, Philip was just another student at the university. The designer credits his time at the uni for giving him the vital skills that led him down his successful path. After graduating, he began the company in his garden shed – hardly an illustrious start to a company that has exhibited across four continents!

Regardless, expand the company did, leading to a clutch of design awards, including best interior practice at the Nottingham Creative Business Awards. If you’re interested in heading down, the exhibition runs from 16th November – 9th December, and will be the first time that a complete history of the company’s output has been seen together in one place. Philip Watts said of the exhibition:

This exhibition should be of interest to people who enjoy design in any form, be it product, commercial, interior, contemporary or retro. My design inspiration often comes from requiring a creative solution to a problem, helping to make life in general more interesting… The work is very sculptural, organic and tactile and has a real warmth to it. Many products are handmade, using traditional practices such as sand casting, which makes them unique.

Philip Watts will also be hosting a talk about his company and the exhibition on 27th November from 1pm, in Nottingham Trent University’s Bonnington Gallery lecture theatre. To attend, email the Gallery here or see the website.
