Writer? Look here!

There seem to be opportunities-a-plenty for writers in the East Midlands at the moment. if you’re a writer in Nottingham (or the surrounding region, we’re not prejudiced!) you should certainly check out the Writing East Midlands website. Here are a smattering of the events and positions to be found therein:

Weekend Workshop for Dramatic Writers

If you’ve ever considered yourself to be a Shakespeare in the making, you should book onto Away With Words. To be held at the end of February, playwright Amanda Whittington and director Esther Richardson will take you through the process of developing ideas, characters and plots into script form. Says Richardson:

Our focus is on writing for the stage but the course will cover techniques you can also use for radio and television drama. Practical exercises will also inspire anyone interested in the creative writing process.

Saturday 27th Feb – Sunday 28th Feb (10am – 4pm). £175 including buffet lunches and all refreshments. Book a place by emailing writing [at] awaywithwords [dot] com with a short summary of writing experience and/or ambitions.

Documentary Pitching Workshop

While we’re in the workshop mood, EM Media are hosting a pitching workshop on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th February 2010, at the Broadway Cinema. Offering ‘complete preparation for getting your factual project funded internationally, including at Doc/Fest’s Marketplace 2010’, it sounds like a bit of a bargain at £20 (if you’re based in the East Midlands).

Freelance Project Coordinator Wanted

The Lyric Lounge project is an attempt to temporarily transform various venues for spoken word and poetry events. First hosted in Leicester as part of the cultural programme for the Special Olympics back in July, they are now looking to extend the concept across the region, starting with Nottingham, Derby and Leicestershire. As a part of that extension, they require a project coordinator and programmer to work with Writing East Midlands for the next ten months or so. They are offering a fixed fee of £7,500 for approximately 50 days work in that period. Contact antonia [at] writingeastmidlands [dot] co [dot] uk or call Henderson Mullin on 0115 9597929. Closing date for applications 30th November 2009.

Information goes up near-daily on Writing East Midlands, so if you’re not familiar with the site already, you should certainly check it out from now on…
