Walking about Art in Sherwood: Art Week 2010

Sherwood Art Week

from the blog of Sherwood Art Week

Now that everyone has rested from walking around Lady Bay during the recent Art Festival , it is time to plan your visit (or multiple visits) to the week long Art Festival on the north side of the city: the Sherwood Art Week:  19 to 26 June.

As I write this, their website is “under construction”, but as it nicely re-directs the reader to their blogsite, one can find out what’s happening with a bit of effort.  And get an insight into how such a festival is organised.  Their Twitter feed is @SherwoodArtweek.  Interestingly, the nicely printed A5 booklet is available in many places in the city, I picked mine up at Edin’s restaurant on Broad Street.

The size and scope of this festival is amazing.  Over 80 artists are listed in the booklet, most of them with their website and other contact details.  Art will be displayed in over 75 businesses and public buildings on both sides of the Mansfield Road and on Haydn Road.  Over a dozen of these are hosting bigger exhibitions.  There are talks and workshops for children and for adults.

As if this wasn’t enough, the week starts and stops with major events:

  • Saturday, 19 June, 11am – 6pm:  Craft Fair in the (I hope it is not too) Secret Garden, United Reform Church
  • Sunday, 20 June, 11am – 4pm: Family Fun Day with activities at several venues in Sherwood
  • Saturday, 26 June, noon-8pm: Sherwood Festival in Woodthorpe Park.

If you are already exhausted at the thought of all those shops and all that art, this year the Art Week itself will have a shop: 581A Mansfield Road, which will be open from Monday 14 June, actiing as an administrative centre as well as a place to buy the art.  So get on a bus in town (56, 57, 58, 59, 87, 88, or 89) and Walk about Art!
