Introducing Seismik – Our New Guest Bloggers

A warm welcome to our new guest bloggers, Si and Jason who together are creative design studio Seismik. In guest blogging tradition, we asked them 10 ‘getting to know you’ questions.

1 .    Who are you ?

Seismik, based in Nottingham, born in Nottingham. We are designers that believe a good solid idea is not limited to a particular medium.

2.     What brought you to Nottingham?

3.     What keeps you in Nottingham?

Nothing at all. We love Nottingham but different cities in the world offer different things and we have a bit of thirst for adventure, however Nottingham will always be our eye of the storm and gateway to the world and we will always work primarily from Nottingham. We live in a world now where you can work from anywhere with anyone so why not take advantage of this fact and rove about a bit.

4.     What makes you different to other creative people in Nottingham?

We think our uniqueness is that we do not specialise, we believe in good solid ideas and that nowadays you can realise those ideas in any medium you choose. You need not tie yourself to one medium as the tools designers have nowadays are pretty damn powerful in that from the same laptop in the same week we can be making a video or a website or a magazine which is something unheard of even ten years ago… We could cash in and just concentrate on just one area but I guess we feel our uniqueness lies in our bravery to be experimental?  We seem to have got good feedback because we do not copy or are over influenced by other designers (not consciously anyways), we believe that good art and design should come from personal experience, emotion and reaction and not based heavily on other’s art (ie their reaction) as this would dilute the point.

5.     Where do you see yourself in 5 years  time?

We are constantly evolving what we do and who we do it for. To guess at what is down the road in 5 years time is whimsical at best. We just hope to be happy and have enough money to eat. The world at present is ever changing with technology and environment that you have to react rather than plan.

6 .     What do you wish you had more time for?

Friends and family, working your dreams can also mean certain compromises but just remember to work hard, play harder.

7.     What Keeps you Awake at Night?

8.     What do you think is Nottingham’s best  kept secret?

That actually this isn’t Shottingham but a bad statistical twist due to county boundaries.

9.     What would you like to see more of in  Nottingham?

We’d like to see more community building (ie: more spirit like this website). Certain pockets think there are solid communities and spirit but this need to be more gelled. Less competitive and more collaborative. Less self congratulatory ego rubs and more team play. Less spotlighting of loud mouth nobodies and more focus on the young talent coming through. We also need to stop competing in our heads with the likes of London, we can quite easily stand on our own two feet without looking elsewhere, embrace our uniqueness.

10.     What Big thing are  you currently working on?

This varies from week to week, we are constantly working with channel 4 on motion ideas, we are also beavering through a lot of projects with Nottingham Trent University. To be honest right now we are having a well deserved rest week (this is very unlikely to happen in reality) as our latest music video we just finished just got on TV and our latest website we made just got featured by design week! As lame as it sounds some of the biggest things we cannot talk about at present (damn nda’s) so you’ll have to watch this space!

Seismik will be writing several blogs as guest bloggers over the next two weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for their unique perspective!
