Literary endeavours

We’ve not said much about all things bookish for a while here. Let’s put that straight. First up, the Creative October team oblige us with their Create and Celebrate week. Past Creative Business Award winners Nicola Monaghan and Michael Pinchbeck will be reading from their work at Edin’s on Broad Street, from 7pm.

Nicola Monaghan shot to fame with her debut novel The Killing Jar, based on a Nottingham estate, and superbly described by the Observer as “a brew of hyperbolic nastiness”. Since then she has published a second novel, Starfishing, and a novella, The Okinawa Dragon.

Michael Pinchbeck is a performance artist and writer perhaps best known for the play The White Album, based around The Beatles’ album of the same name. His current work The Ashes is about the controversial Bodyline cricket tour of 1932 featuring the maligned Nottinghamshire local boy Harold Larwood.

A varied evening there then! But if your reading tastes are strictly professional, then there’s an event for you this week too!

Creative Greenhouse are hosting the Nottingham Business Book Club Best Bits from the Best Books talk on Thursday 7th October. If you’ve ever thought “I really need to brush up on my marketing/ presentation/ motivation/ selling* skills but which book to buy?” then this is the talk for you. Jeanne Booth has read those books so you don’t have to!

Jeanne’s talk starts at 6pm at Arnold Library and you can book your place here.

Finally, it’s National Poetry Day on Thursday! I’m tempted to offer you the chance to send in your haikus. Celebrate Nottingham in 17 syllables. No prizes available, just for fun. The best will be featured on the Twitter feed throughout the day.
