I don’t know about you but I’ve avoided New Year Resolutions so far. The healthy ones anyway. Those can wait till the weather’s less shitty. Or at least until the days feel longer, say March-ish. But there are some resolutions that it feels sensible to start in the middle of winter. New crafts and skills definitely come into that. Indoorsy things that can be done in front of a fire accompanied by chocolate and red wine.
It’s well documented how much we love Knitting here at Creative Towers. Knitting is EXACTLY the right kind of wintery pastime to take up. So if you’ve already fallen off the wagon and your trainers are still in their box, consider taking up a couple of sticks and some wool instead. The great creative folk of Nottingham can help you. And then, once you’ve mastered it, you can do great and fabulous things like yarn bombing a tank, for example.
For a start, there are knitting workshops taking place at The Framework Knitters Museum. Where better to learn how to make socks than the seat of industrial sock making in days of yore? The sock making workshop will be run by Nicki Merrall, sock maker extraordinaire, on Wednesday 26 February 2014, from 9.30-3.30 and will explain all the techniques needed – how to knit in the round, kitchener stitch (for seam free toes) and how to turn a heel. You must book in advance. For more details, call the museum on 0115 984 6914 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Further information is available on the museum website
Our friends at Knit Nottingham are doing a massive load of knitting and crochet workshops from now till August. I learnt to crochet with Eleanor at KN and have shamefully neglected it as a skill ever since. (Don’t let that put you off) The range of workshops this year includes beginner’s knitting and crochet, as well as things like fairisle, finishing techniques, ripple stitch and clothes. Book well in advance as some have already sold out – quick! – by contacting the shop at 0115 947 4239
