I like the “pop up” shop idea, and the extension to other, temporary, ways for artists and creatives to engage. Last year we had a “pop up” shop at the end of Thurland Street, in the run up to Christmas, with a different creative/small business each week. There are not one, but two Pop Ups to publicise for October:
- 3-2-1 Ignition is a Science-Engineering-Technology-Maths event in one of the units in Broadmarsh Centre from 15 October to 2 November. It promises “creative activities, workshops and sessions”, and even if it will have lots of activities for children – how much science do you remember from school? More on their website.
- The Nottingham Derby Society of Architects is taking over a unit in the Cornerhouse ” to celebrate local architecture, of both professional and student work from both The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.” They will be there from 15 to 27 October, and there will be a special focus on the plans for Trinity Square. More on their website.
If looking at plans gets you itching to put pen to paper, Surface Gallery has a number of activities and events as part of their contribution to The Big Draw, under the heading of Line In Motion. See their website for dates, times and in some cases, small fees.
If you are already accomplished, you might be interested in a UK conference of and for illustrators taking place in Nottingham on 10 November, arranged by zero2illo. If any of the names:
Rod Hunt (keynote speaker), Leigh Hodgkinson, Kate Slater, Stanley Chow, Kate Hindley, Nicky Lander (Creative Manager at Igloo Books) and Victoria Pierce (Senior Agent at Illustration Ltd Illustration Agency), Claire Cheung (tablet designer with Wired Magazine)
mean anything to you, this could be your day. Tickets are £50 before 20 October, the event is at the “Nottingham Conference Centre” (aka the NT Newton Building as upgraded) in the centre of town.
Finally, if you do have a spare root vegetable and are interested in “unearth[ing] entirely new types of creepy art encounters”, then the free event Function VI from Reactor at the interesting art space Primary in Lenton might be of interest. It is as 18.00 on Saturday, 20 October. Some time on their website might be good background before booking at ticket (and don’t forget the required vegetable – it is a condition of entry).
