Emma is pretty handy with hairstyling but we needed specialists in for the open day, and called upon our friends Heebie Gee Bees, from Newcastle. Having been long time friends of Emma’s and super talented and enthusiastic ladies, we couldn’t wait to have them on board with us for the day. What’s even better is that as both of them have vast knowledge and experience of modelling and performing, they could also bring their skills to the dressing table in regards to styling, posing and general confidence. All round win, I’d say!

We also brought in Aislinn from BooBooKitty Couture,. She set herself up a rail of gorgeous dresses, her dolly Doris and brought her sewing along to make some last minute bits and pieces for a craft fair later in the evening; she really never stops working!

We had some early starts and late nights (including a craft fare/Speedkings gig to attend on Saturday night!), some tears from girls who couldn’t believe their makeovers, cuddles, lots of high fives, energy drinks, cookies, snuggies on radiators, cupcakes from Amy (hell yeah!), endless cups of tea (Hannah is brilliant), goodie bags, ratties, girls celebrating birthdays and divorces, and some that just wanted to feel good about themselves! Days like that are a precious rarity to me; when you’re going flat out but smiling and laughing the whole while, each person bringing their own special technique, style and brilliance to the table. Your back might ache, your shoulder might be creaking and your feet’ll be on fire but nothing compares to the smile (and sometime, tears!) of a girl who beams from ear to ear when they see themselves made up. It’s my dream to do this full time, and weekends like this motivate me to work harder to make it real…

Our Links Round-up today starts in the centre of Nottingham.  The programme of events at the New Art Exchange includes talks, workshops, tours, and more.  Full details are on their website, but I would just like to point out two:

• this afternoon, 18 October, 5 – 7 pm, there is a Visual Arts workshop for Young People aged 11 – 25 that uses the speech ‘Aint I a women’ by women rights activist Sojourn Truth as a stimulus to create visual responses. Sojourn Truth was born a slave in New York about 200 years ago, but escaped to freedom.
• A Pinhole Camera workshop, this Saturday, 22 October, 2 – 4 pm. Described as family friendly, participants will “will turn old drinks cans into working pinhole cameras”, it leaves ambiguous whether the adults bring full drinks cans and make them empty first (but I suspect not). Photos on the day are developed in the darkroom – who needs an Iphone or a Canon to be a photographer?

If you need to get out more, I would recommend a trip or two to Lincoln which is about to enjoy its first ever Digital Culture Festival from 21 to 29 October.  Going under the name of Frequency Festival 2011, there are displays, performances, debates, networking opportunities and more. There nicely laid out website provides a mailing list option and they even have their own ringtone, entitled White Noise in the Key of F, in both MP3 and md4 format.

I f you need to get out more, but want to go north rather than east, our former guest bloggers the Harley Gallery are always worth a visit.  Particularly between 29 October and 24 December, for the exhibition of 20th Century British Art from Welbeck Abbey.  This is the first public exhibition of the collection built up by William Parente who will be giving a talk about it on 3 December (talk tickets £7). Among the artists shown are John Napper, Dame Elizabeth Frink, Paul Nash and LS Lowry.

And if you would rather work on your entry for their Open Exhibition next January, and a possible place in William Parente’s exhibition thirty years hence, you have until the first week in December. The theme is “H is for …..”. Details and the entry form on their website.  I look forward to seeing the results, in 2012 if not 2041.

Zincwhite: Why has no one thought of this before? Zincwhite’s genius touch of upcycling is surely the best gift for any creative friends. On Saturday 29th, they will be bringing their jewellery and accessories made from recycled Derwent colouring pencils, knitting needles, old typewriters, broken camera lenses and artist’s paint brushes to join us at Bunkers Hill in Nottingham!

Hannah Stevens is a very talented lady! She will be with us at Bunkers Hill selling her range of hand screen printed textiles, such as cushions, lampshades, tea towels, hand bags, purses and pencil cases, all made from her own fab print designs!

Dirtyface creates limited edition apparel in collaboration with many talented artists and designers. The dirtyface range represents an underground movement of artists, generating a unique brand that exudes creativity and originality. Sifting through the pictures of these tasty looking treats has been difficult, knowing I have to wait 14 more days before I can get my teeth around one! Meanwhile all I can do is tantalise you with the same temptations… see you on the 29th- the cake pops are calling you….

Awesome Pillows Awesome Pillows creates hand made decorative pillow shaped characters stuffed within an inch of their life. On Saturday 29th, she promises us, “plump pirates, undead upholstery and backrest bats as well as more pillowsaurus’s and squishamajigs!” …Awesome!

This month, Nottingham plays host to a unique arts event – the Carnival of Monsters is coming to town! From 15th-29th October, if you trot along to the Bartons Buses site at Chilwell, you’ll find all sorts of amazing arty goings-on. From music to art to poetry to comedy, there’s a bit of everything

Over 30 artists living and working the East Midlands will be exhibiting. There will be 5 pavilions acting as art galleries, showcasing the artists’ work in a whole range of different environments, from warehouse space to disused offices. These are open from Monday-Saturday for the duration of the Carnival.

But wait, theres more! On Saturday 15th October, there are special events taking place to open the Carnival:

Black History Month is running from 1pm-5pm
MissImp, Nottingham’s improv comedy group will be performing.
And there will be live music from Chris McDonald.

And on Saturday 22nd, you can take your little monsters along to The Big Draw and let them go crazy with paint, pens and paper as they make their own monsters. Just make sure they’re not wearing their best clothes…

The same day also sees Oxjam take over Beeston for a live music event to raise money for Oxfam. This is a wristband only event, so sign up here: Oxjam Beeston Takeover if you don’t want to miss out!

The Carnival closes on Saturday 29th with more live music from the Denizen record label.

HANG THE VJ!

A Collaborative Night of DJ’s & VJ’s – a visual and musical spectacle in Association with Mimm and Ashes 57 Exhibition. Broadway Media Arts have teamed up with friends Mimm to present a special collaboration of live art, dj’s and visuals.

Variety is the spice of life – and here you have it at Broadway… while DJs from Mimm Recordings spin their diverse repertoire – Artist Nick Wright will be creating visuals on the glass screen outside. In addition, over at the Mimm shop, there is a solo exhibition and live art from Ashes57, AKA Delphine Ettinger. An illustrator and a street photographer, she has worked with many groundbreaking labels and is well recognized on the club scene. Celebrating Black history

October is Black History Month. Celebrated in Britain for nearly quarter of a century, Black History Month is an opportunity for people and groups all over the country to promote knowledge of Black history and experience. Sharing in positive cultural contributions to British society and increasing Black people’s awareness of their cultural heritage.

Each year Nottingham hosts a diverse collective of events engaging through cultural organisations and community groups, local broadcasters and community centres, clubs, museums and arts venues. This includes African music to club nights, exhibitions and plays, concerts, dance, Gospel choirs and community events and much more.

Big news for Nottingham young creatives

Launched on 27 September, the Young Creative Awards are for Young people aged 13 – 24 across Nottingham who would like to put themselves on the creative map.

We know that Nottingham is the place to be seen for creative people, businesses, learning, culture and design excellence – and the Young Creative Awards will provide young creatives with a fantastic opportunity to tap in to this creative spirit, and make their mark in what is to be an exciting year for the arts.

Supported by One Nottingham, Nottingham City Council, Confetti Media Group, Fastgraphics, Fourmost Films, New College Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, South Nottingham College, Nusic and Skeleton Productions. Sometimes I genuinely think that people assume I make a decent living from being a photographer. I don’t.

There was a time when professional photography was a skill that was only possessed by few and required a lot more thought than just picking up a DSLR, pointing and clicking. I’m not even talking about 20 years ago, when I studied photography 6 years ago I was taught solely on film. And with film, you can’t just review instantly, hit the trash button and try again. As a poor student, after you’d paid for the film (maybe even splashing out on a polaroid!), the developing and then the paper for printing, if you then found your negative was out of focus then you’d just wasted far too much money and countless hours squinting in a dark room. After the first failure, you learn pretty quickly to get it right first time. What percentages of photographers today even own a light meter?

So it seems that the opportunity for photography to be the well paid and respected career that it once was is slowly dwindling. There’s only so much money people are willing to spend and this divided by the exponentially growing number of “professional” photographers proves to be a dire situation for anyone, like me, for whom this is their sole source of income.

Model portfolios, family portraits and now even weddings have been targeted by amateur professionals so that they can earn a little pocket money from their hobby, under charging and pushing out those of us who truly value our craft and aren’t ashamed to price accordingly. Did you know that brides to be are now spending less on wedding photography than they are on their wedding dresses? Sometimes even less that on the flowers! It’s rather upsetting to think about something that has a shelf life of a day taking more of the budget than memories that last a lifetime.

But this was not meant to turn into the “woe is me” entry that it has become but rather a small nod to the area within the industry that seems to still value quality in photography, Commercial Photography.

I’ll admit that I never intended to step into commercial photography, but with my studies, I was taught to turn my hand to photograph anything that came into the viewfinder. In this case it’s chairs. The one thing that I have found about commercial photography which makes it this hidden jewel in the photography industry is the client’s expectations. Commercial clients don’t pussy foot around, if they don’t like what you’ve done or your work is shoddy then they’re going to tell you with both barrels. For them, this isn’t just about spending some of their disposable income, it’s about their product or service being shown to its full potential as these images could and often do dictate their sales. In a retail market based on visual imagery, the quality of the photograph is taken in at a subconscious level and I think that sometimes we don’t acknowledge product photography as actual photography. We don’t think that the same care for focus and attention to exposure is taken over something as simple as a food mixer as for a bridal portrait. That’s what makes product and commercial photography such an important but undervalued sector; we are constantly exposed to it but never consciously appreciative of it. Huge companies spend millions researching how these images affect our subconscious mind and what it is about the content that makes us reach for our hard earned cash.

A photographer that I assist regularly shoots for a worldwide lingerie company. Within the parameters of his brief are the stipulations set out by the company in order to maximise sales. For example, for North America, the model must not wear red shoes or lipstick, for Japan, he can’t use a blonde model, the list goes on. Did you ever think that so much thought went into an image that might only ever be printed 3×3” in a trade catalogue?

So, I’ll work away quietly on my own in my studio, photographing chairs and jewellery. No models, make-up artists or fancy lighting just my mp3 player for company. Knowing that, even though I may be driven mad by photographing the same thing in a different colour way, there is still a place in this industry for professional photographers to be valued.

Who are you?
My name is Emma Neale. I run two photography businesses and a Make-over Photo-shoot business.
Luna Photography is for Weddings, family portraiture and commercial photography
Miss Rain Photography is for the alternative side, burlesque, pin-ups, nude and alternative fashion.
and finally Flashes and Lashes is a collaboration between myself and Sali Jones providing makeover shoots in a vintage pin-up style.
All business are based in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area but I have travelled all over the country with my work.

What brought you to Nottingham?
Sali Jones! Hah ha! I made quite a name for myself with my photography in Newcastle upon Tyne but after a messy break up and being made redundant I decided to make the push with my photography. Even though I thought that Newcastle wasn’t that far out of the way, people were reluctant to travel to me for work an d being so far from London.

Moving to Nottingham made sense, I already had a best friend there and we moved in together, it’s within 2 hours of London and perfect for travel and rail links.

What keeps you in Nottingham?
I have such an amazing network of people around me, it would be silly to leave. I do think about moving back to Newcastle occasionally but I think that, for me, the work is here.

What makes you different to other creative people in Nottingham? (eg:- What is your business specialism, what makes you unique as a person)

In a photography sense, I think my speciality is pin-up and burlesque. People recognise my style and it’s an awesome niche to be in. Also, I’ll never deny the fact that being a female in a predominately male industry does give me the edge in certain jobs. Women feel more comfortable around me and I do think that’s why I have done so well in the pin-up and burlesque area of photography. It also helps in weddings as I tend to be able to put brides at ease, I’ve helped a bride into their corset and fixed her hair when the hairdresser didn’t get it quite right.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I hope to be taking on more weddings, commercial and family portraiture. I also have huge plans for Flashes and Lashes. I want our own city centre studio, a hairdresser on the payroll and travelling to vintage fairs. I don’t think those hopes are unachievable at all. I’d just like to be able to make a decent living from photography.

What do you wish you had more time for?
I wish I had more time for experimentation with my photography. I love the feeling when I’ve had a lighting idea in my mind and then it comes to fruition. I also wish I had more time for self promotion and marketing. It seems like every moment not shooting is spent in front of the computer editing.

What keeps you awake at night?
Not a lot! I’m usually so tired that I go straight off but I do occasionally get those moments of insomnia when I’m working out timetables of shooting and technicalities of lighting!

What do you think is Nottingham’s best kept secret?
I think Nottingham’s “true” alternative scene is the best kept secret. There are amazing people within the creative community in Nottingham pushing the boundaries of art, music and vision but they are drowned out by mainstream. I’d love to see this not be a secret!

What would you like to see more of in Nottingham?
More alternative nights out, better venues and maybe a better burlesque night. I’d like to see people appreciate these things too. What we have now has become stale and boring.

What Big thing are you currently working on?
Flashes and Lashes have a lot of things up their sleeves, one of which being open days around the country! We just need to work out, venues, costs and dates but the demand is there!

Organised by the V&A – this highly prestigious exhibition features an exhibition by one of our own highly talented exports.  Most Nottinghamians will recognise by now the name ‘Jon Burgerman’.  He has his spiritual home here in Nottingham and is one of our most famous contemporary artists – with huge success nationally and internationally – having now found a new spiritual home in Brooklyn, New York – a veritable ‘Mecca’ for Street Artists.

Burgerman’s work will be featured in the exhibition at Nottingham Castle Gallery, starting 2 July. This is exciting news for anyone who (like me) is a huge fan of his vibrant, unusual and entertaining brand of street art.

The exhibition explores the transition street art has made from the painted wall to printmaking.  A number of satellite exhibitions featuring work from international and local artists will be at various galleries around the city – including: The Lace Market Gallery, New College Nottingham, The Surface Gallery, Switch Studios and Shrunken Heads Gallery.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see this culturally important work and get insight into how this genre has developed and helped shape British culture today.

Some of these responses would be best followed up by the Monty Python team – with added humour and zeal – but in their absence, I will do my best to continue this thread in ‘honour of Creativity’.

It is noted that the question of ‘happiness’ poses an interesting challenge for us all – especially in these dreary times of political wrangling, austerity and wars.  To keep our costs down, many of us have tried to seek comfort in the TV – sat with a bag of munchies and a beer – but we can’t rely on that either – there’s nothing cheery on that any more – it’s all doom and gloom. And otherwise, if I have to watch one more episode of The Sweeney, I’ll ****?!@**….!!!  

Anyway, it’s really doesn’t sit right with me, to feel so led by TV or media. Artists are very individualistic, and like to lead themselves – be it in ‘tribes’ sometimes – (don’t we?)  So, I’ve stopped watching the news and TV generally, and have started reading back issues of The Dandy to get my laughs instead – much more informative.

I’m sure that most of you out there in the creative community would agree, that creative people are often under-estimated for their valuable contribution to business, and ultimately, our impact on society.  But do you think maybe it’s because we don’t make ourselves heard enough? Do you think maybe it’s because we don’t always realise our true value either?

Without creative people where would the world be? For example, without music we could not sing or dance, express our emotions – happy and sad, anger or exhilaration – the things that help us to get through the events in life – good and bad. Without a good book to read, or a great picture to look at we might have nothing to see, ponder or inquire over – to make us feel delight or disgust!  Without video games we might never get the chance to be an ace race-car driver or fly a space ship.  Whatever it may be, we can say that everything about everything, somewhere down the line, has involved ‘creatives’ and creative deeds.

From this I have decided, that for me, the time to do something different is NOW!  To make better use of the creative freedoms I have, and investigate how I can put my ideas and practical skills to use – to enhance my life, and the lives of others.

I’ve made a start by ensuring there’s now always something good on my TV – (I don’t mean the headless Buddah – that isn’t good, that’s just bad photography!) I was going to skip my old set, but a friend of mine has improved it – and now it makes me happy, so it will stay.  Even though there is a small tear on the face of the clown, I see this as my reminder to make the most of my day.

This is also my contribution to the reuse-revolution, in readiness for the post-digital switch-off….

Well the holidays are over, for now – but what a marvelous thing to have a week ‘bookended’ by bank holidays – might even be rarer than a solar eclipse!  Hopefully you made the most of it (if you had the opportunity).

Now it’s back to work, but at least we still have the beautiful sunshine to maintain some ‘happy’ hormones, before the rain comes.

Fear not, this is not intended to be a prediction of the weather – but the near future for Nottingham is looking even brighter (spiritually, at least) – as there are plenty of arty and cultural activities to keep us all occupied over the coming week.

Fluorescent Sheep

This entirely volunteer–run gallery has yet another intriguing collaboration to offer lovers of contemporary art…(picture above courtesy of the Surface Gallery website).

This curiously titled exhibition, alone, is enough to entice me for a visit. If only to answer one question - will there be any formaldehyde sheep?  We’ll have to go and see for ourselves, but it promises to be a fascinating exhibition, with or without – so move over Damien Hirst!

Unveiling

Another group exhibition of the ‘multi-disciplinary’ kind is on display from 6th May at Crocus Gallery – a venue that in the year since its launch, has fast grown its reputation for creativity with genuine community spirit.

“‘Unveiling’ features a diverse range of works from photography to installation. Representations range through physical decay to emotional trauma.”

We would less easily recognise the good things in life, without the bad that we also experience from time-to-time - it may also be possible to see beauty in decay. This thought-provoking exhibition is likely to ensure we take an inward look, to help us find out.

‘Unveiling’ will run alongside the current exhibition to celebrate the Gallery’s first birthday.

This is a day of free, fun and activities for all ages and interests. The event last year was fascinating and gave a real insight into many of the great research projects in progress at the University.  It promises to be a wonderfully creative way to find out about science – through fun activities and experimentation.  So, get your ‘inquisitive’ hat on, and head down to the city centre campus this weekend.
