Really enjoyed this, outstanding post.

Also, I had no idea that Nottingham is statistically the 'poorest city'. My partner Kat and myself are poor NTU graduates working part-time jobs, no doubt dragging the average down :P As you pointed out yourself, Nottingham has two universities and a huge student population which surely skews the statistics. Nottingham has never struck me as a particularly 'poor' city.

Lots of useful information here from Kathy and while agreeing with Suzie, a priority for me, based again on the experience of previous local Quango's, is that CQ/CD and the funding delivery is firstly transparent and inclusive. I understand the emphasis on bricks and mortar property but think that the real growth and benefit will come from the local production of Intellectual Property. My instinct is that the more enabling that is done with our City's Artists and Creatives to actually create, to innovate and produce, the greater will be our City's benefit. Most will know me as something of a sceptic with regard to such 'growth strategies' as this but this item is a great start CN and Kathy, from this introduction, certainly seems like the right person for the CE job.

Nice piece, I do hope Kathy you can negotiate the rather heavy politics of public-private collaborations, and that the Creative Quarter does indeed stay lean and not become as bloated and irrelevant as many of the quangos that have preceded it,

Sue - you sum up everything I am saying perfectly in your paragraph:

"I can come home and find it very difficult to write precisely because my brain is fagged from too much dull, non-varying work in a non-stimulating environment. The days when I can get out of the office, meet people, do something different are usually busier but also mean that my brain is wired and excited when I get home. You have to be ever vigilant and determined to wake yourself up to new things when you get in – it’s so easy to turn the TV on instead."

It might be someone's choice in the first place, albeit a bad one, to get wrapped up in a job that zaps their enthusiasm; but it's a very real and difficult trap to get out of - if they don't want to live in poverty or completely burn out from trying to achieve everything.

I find the video you posted really depressing, because it's true! There's a lot of shame in creativity; by the time kids grow up, those interested in the arts are seen as the 'weird, whimsical kids; that will probably never end up with a proper job.'

As Ron G Holland, my favourite entrepreneur and creative thinker would say: creativity - when it's encouraged and developed properly, breeds innovation and clever solutions to problems. The kinds of solutions that the flat, unimaginative and logical brain rarely conceives.

Tony, this is what I currently do and my creativity is very much hindered by my day job, precisely because it's a non-creative job. I can come home and find it very difficult to write precisely because my brain is fagged from too much dull, non-varying work in a non-stimulating environment. The days when I can get out of the office, meet people, do something different are usually busier but also mean that my brain is wired and excited when I get home. I do need to pay bills and I am looking for a new job but how much easier and more productive would it be if creativity and a variety of ways of working were the norm in many businesses? People like me would be happier, less frustrated and not exhausted when we sit down to do something we love in the evening, and our day work might be more enjoyable too.

Perhaps there's a difference between those who train in a creative field and those who don't. I know writers and poets who've worked years in pay-the-bills jobs while crafting stories, novels and poems at nights and on the weekends. Their creativity is not diminished by their jobs. Some even get the chance to give up the day jobs if they're successful enough.
